Session: Quantifying Errors and Uncertainties in Altimetry data

Presentation type: Type Oral

The DUACS multimission system merges today data from 6 satellites (Jason-3, Sentinel-3A, Altika, and Cryosat-2, Jason-2 and HY2A) to deliver high quality altimetry Sea Level products for oceanographic applications. This high number of altimeter missions contributes to the robustness of the system and the product quality, but also opens new perspectives in terms of resolution. Using the global Synthetic Aperture Radar mode (SARM) coverage of Sentinel-3A, soon completed by Sentinel-3B will allow us to fully exploit the fine-scale content of the altimetric missions.

As part as CNES R&D activities new algorithms are tested and experimental products are generated and proposed to the oceanography community (https://www.aviso.altimetry.fr/duacs). For this purpose, a new stacking method (LR-RMC) was developed for Sentinel-3 SAR waveforms and presented at the last OSTST (Boy, 2017). It has been demonstrated that the swell sensitivity is totally removed and that the range/SWH range noises are even improved by 15 to 40% depending on wave heights (Moreau, 2018). Following up this preliminary analysis, we implemented here several methodology to characterize the impact of LR-RMC processing on the small scales of the ocean. Notably we performed wavenumber spectra of 1Hz and 20 Hz S3A SLA at global and regional scales (Vergara, 2017) in order to analyze the noise levels and observable spatial scales. The relevance of using this new processing in the next generation of DUACS Sea Level products is then discussed.
