First results from the PEACHI Jason-3 prototype: a processing laboratory for innovative altimetry products based on Jason-3 data

Following the successful launch of Jason-3 and benefiting from PEACHI/SARAL prototype experience, the PEACHI-J3 experimental processing prototype is now delivering delayed-time products to the expert users’ community. PEACHI-J3 products are based on S-(I)GDR Jason-3 official products, enriched with specific algorithms outputs such as numerical retracking estimates, new wet tropospheric correction, and other useful corrections such as 3-D sea state bias correction and updated geophysical corrections.
Notably, numerical retracking estimates are now available over the global ocean: performance of this algorithm has been demonstrated using Jason-2 data and Jason-3 early results already prove the high value and potential of this retracking algorithm. By taking into account the instrumental point target response and through a real maximum likehood estimation process, correction look-up tables are not needed anymore. Range and waveheight estimation noise reduction reach up to 10% and 60%, respectively. Numerical retracking paves the way for future waveform retracking improvements in both LRM and SAR altimeter modes.
A new wet tropospheric correction, derived from a stratified neural network approach, is also distributed for Jason-3. Preliminary results will be shown.
Results of a new 3-dimensional sea state bias correction, considering wind speed as well as both wave height and mean period will be shown based on inputs from other PEACHI-J3 algorithms.
A global overview of the prototype will be presented as well as how to access the PEACHI products for Jason-3 and other missions.
