From Level 2 to higher level water height products for hydrological applications

Regarding altimetry over inland water bodies, Space agencies are mainly providing Level-2 products (along track products). External services such as the CNES Hydroweb service operated by LEGOS and CLS are additionally providing Level-3 products (mono mission time series at virtual stations for rivers and multi mission time series for lakes). The interest of higher level products merging the different altimetry missions and exploiting their relative temporal and spatial sampling is particularly important for downstream applications. In the frame of the Copernicus Global Land Service set in place by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), for which CLS is coordinating the Cryosphere and Water component, such products will be proposed, qualified and validated. In particular, they will have to integrate both Jason-3 and Sentinel-3 topography missions in operational conditions.
This paper aims at showing the preparatory activities which have already been initiated at CLS and LEGOS. At the different levels of the chain, processing algorithms are evaluated, compared and their performances are assessed. Several datasets (Jason-1, Jason-2, Jason-3, Cryosat-2, Saral and Sentinel-3) are integrated in order to enable efficient cross-calibration of the various missions and merging all measurements into densified higher level products. Additional information derived from the exploitation of the water masks are also used in the processing chain.
In this context, we propose to give an illustrated overview of potential of the altimeter constellation and its performances for hydrological applications, taking benefit of the synergy and complementarity between the different altimeter missions.
