Session: Quantifying Errors and Uncertainties in Altimetry data

Presentation type: Type Oral

During the last 20 years, altimeter high-quality near real time and delayed time Level3 (along-track cross-calibrated SLA) and Level4 products (merging multiple sensors) delivered by AVISO have been developed in parallel with Level2 (a.k.a [O/I]GDR) processing improvements. However, whereas the errors budget observed on the Level2 products has been often discussed (see for instance Ablain et al, 2009 & 2012), few quantification and descriptions of the errors observed in the Level3/4 products are available.
The formal mapping error product, associated to a SLA map product, gives an indication of the quality of this map. Additionally, global accuracy numbers and random noise values, associated to along-track products are also available. They are useful for applications that need to associate an error the altimeter measurements (e.g. assimilation/merging of altimeter measurements). However, these error products are far from to be complete and need to be improved.
This presentation aims to present these error budgets of L3/L4 products now available for users, and to present different statistical results that contribute to refine the description and quantification of the errors of L3/L4 products at mesoscales.
